Melatonin, a hormone naturally produced by the body’s pineal gland in response to darkness, helps the timing of your circadian rhythm as well as sleep. Some studies have shown that supplemental melatonin may improve the time to fall asleep and the total amount of sleep.
Though there is no Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for melatonin, it has been suggested that the timing of ingestion, rather than the amount of the dose, is more important for melatonin to be most effective for sleep.
